Site updates

Jeconais posted on Thursday 12th January 2006 4:22am

First, as a belated update, there is now (obviously) the ability to add comments to these sorts of posts.

Second, "Change Look" link above has been changed.  It is no longer a simple javascript style changer, it now goes to a page where you can change the site colours as well as move the navigation around.  Personally, I'm running in the "Top" mode.

But what if you don't like the colors?  Then send me your own and I'll add them to the site (if they look good).  Simply download this file, change it and email it to me.  Yes, it does assume that you have some basic CSS knowledge.

ETA: I've had some reports about people not being able to get the navigation position to change.  This is because of a cookie the old version of the site set.  To be able to use this, that cookie has got to be deleted - unfortunately, the automatic delete does not seem to delete if the cookie was set to null.

In firefox it's easy to delete the cookies - go to Tools -> Options (Edit -> Options if you are on Linux) -> Privacy -> Cookies -> View Cookies.  In the filter, type fanficauthors, and then delete every "style" cookie you see - this will reset everything so it works.

Internet Explorer users have a harder job.  The easiest way is to go to Tools -> Options -> Delete Cookies - but this will delete EVERY cookie you have stored on your computer.  There is a more complicated way that involved doing a search for a folder called "cookies" then finding every fanficauthors.net cookie, but I'd rather not say how to do that, as I don't want people complaining if it breaks.

Hey, I see you used my suggestion! Sweet! Now the readers can see with one look who updated! And you added the time of day as well! Go, Admin! ^_^

Hey Tim

have you thought of getting rid of the random sorting of the various authors on the "More Authors" page? I agree that it is a nifty thing and probably fairer than listing them alphabetically, but it's also confusing and unnecessarily complicates the process of checking for updates. How about you sort them after updates, so that the authors with the most recent updates are listed in the topmost line, from left to right? It would make checking for updates far more simple. As of now, there's even the chance to miss an update if I don't look real close.
Tell me what you think.

The updates are all very nice, but I liked the main page (which lists all the authors and their most recent updates) much better when it displayed three updates for each author instead of the one it does now. It made it easier to assess what has been updated since the last visit, at least for me. Please consider changing it back.

thanks

Love all the options, have changed my layout.

I had no problems at all accessing any of the options.
